Why do we ask for your Medical and your Vision Insurance?

Many of our patients are fortunate to have vision insurance AND medical (health) insurance, and they often ask us “who covers what?”.

Vision plans are intended to cover routine eyecare, and most will offer some discount on the cost of glasses and/or contact lenses. If you have a medical condition which could potentially impacts your vision, or if your eye doctor makes a diagnosis during your routine eye exam, your vision plan will likely not cover it, and your eye doctor will attempt to bill your medical insurance.

Patients with dry eyes, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, eye infections or injuries all utilize their medical health insurance to offset the cost of care. An eye exam on a patient with these, or countless other related conditions, is different and often more complex than routine care. In most circumstances, ancillary testing, coordination of care, and advanced procedures are involved. Vision plans will not cover an eye health exam involving a medical diagnosis.

What does this mean for you?

Your vision plan may have an exam benefit, which covers the cost of your routine eye exam. If you have an on going or emerging eye condition then your vision plan will likely deny our claim. This means you can choose to pay for the charges yourself, or we will bill your medical insurance. Most medical insurance plans have co-pays or deductibles which must be met before they will contribute to costs, so even though you have a vision plan you may incur charges for your annual eye exam. These charges are your responsibility and must be paid at time of service or on receipt of our invoice. Unfortunately, if you have a condition that we are not aware of at the time of scheduling we are not able to confirm which plan will be billed until you have seen the doctor.
For this reason we will always require your medical and vision plan information.

The good news is that even if we bill your medical insurance for your exam, your vision plan will still contribute to the cost of any eyewear you require, as long as you have a benefit available.

Why doesn't my vision plan cover "iWellness" testing?

As mentioned, your Vision Plan will cover routine eyecare. Our doctors have chosen to invest in advanced technology which allows them to more thoroughly exam the inside of your eyes. This enables the doctors to diagnose eye conditions much earlier which increases their ability to successfully protect your vision.

If a diagnosis is made or the doctor is actively managing ocular disease, your medical insurance company can be billed for the testing.

FAQs

Understanding Vision Insurance

Vision insurance offers coverage for eye exams, eye care, eyewear, and other vision-related expenses.

It allows you to be proactive in caring for your eyesight and ensuring that you receive regular eye exams to maintain good vision.

Where can I get vision insurance?

You can get vision insurance in many ways, such as through the company you work for, association, school district, and even government programs like Medicare or Medicaid. You can also opt to purchase your own vision benefit plan.

What kinds of vision insurance plans are available?

Vision insurance comes in the form of either a vision benefits package or a discount vision plan.

A vision benefits package offers members eye care services in exchange for an annual premium or membership fee, a yearly deductible for each enrolled member, and a co-pay each time a member accesses a service.

A discount vision plan offers eye care at fixed discounted rates after an annual premium or membership fee and a deductible is paid.

What does vision insurance cover?

Vision insurance generally covers eye care services and products such as annual eye exams, eyeglass frames and lenses, contact lenses, and LASIK and PRK vision correction at discounted rates. You can get cheaper service by seeing a network provider as opposed to out-of-network providers.

What are my payment options?

If your employer offers group vision insurance, you may be able to pay for it through payroll deductions or flexible spending accounts (FSAs). An FSA allows you to use pre-tax dollars to purchase selected health benefits such as vision insurance, which can save you money.

If you purchase an individual vision insurance plan because your employer doesn't offer a group plan or because you're self-employed, you can expect to be billed monthly or annually.

Care Credit

CareCredit, a healthcare credit card that helps patients pay for procedures not typically covered by insurance, such as LASIK and Premium-IOLs. It offers low monthly payments and no up-front costs, allowing patients to begin their procedure immediately and pay over time. The goal is to make it easier for patients to have the vision procedures they want without having to save up for years.

For vision procedures, CareCredit offers:

  • Low minimum monthly payments
  • No up-front costs or prepayment penalties
